Children love writing alphabet poems. The steps are simple, there is no rhyme, and there are no hard fast rules to follow in the layout.
First, choose a subject to write about. Make it a broad subject, such as sports, animals, plants and trees, or even geography.
Next, have the children write out the alphabet on lined paper, one letter per line.
A
B
C
Now, have the children come up with one word for each letter. For example, if a child is writing an animal alphabet poem, she might write:
Anteater
Bird
Cat
If a child gets stuck on a letter, such as Q or X, have the child use adjectives to describe the next lettered noun. For example:
Quirky Raccoon
or
Xtraordinary Yak
The final step to writing an alphabet poem is to put it all together. Children may want to write out their poem with two or three words per line:
Anteater, bird, cat,
Dog, elephant, ferret. . .
They may even want to rework their alphabet poem so that it has a rhyming pattern. The choice is up to the individual (and the teacher) which is why alphabet poems are so much fun to write.
